What will a human yellow-neck look like? Although he will sometimes present himself as a “female” (consider Jason, below) the point is that the yellow-neck acts to mate without committing to nesting or protecting and may well achieve this goal through deception. He may mislead others as to his status and his intent in order to reduce the likelihood of rejection on the one hand and of aggression on the other.

Rejection would be from females who are interested in mating with a male who will commit and provide a nest; aggression from males who are competing for the same female or protecting their female from
other males.

What does a male lizard gain by using the sneaky male approach?

Because, despite the success of the yellow neck, the fact is that he has not got the same opportunity for inseminating females as do males who have provided a nest. In lizards, the yellow neck’s sperm has developed the very special ability to survive (this sometimes means that the sperm outlives the lizard!). Unlike the other two types of blotched lizard the yellow-neck’s sperm stays potent for some two weeks after mating.

But for human males, this (as far as we know!) does not happen. All male sperm has the same survivability. What’s more we now know that over 99% of a male’s sperm is designed solely for the purpose of killing or blocking competing sperm. This sperm-army contains 500 million killer sperm, 100 million blocker sperm and only about one million egggetters1. So the yellow neck would seem to be at a disadvantage when it comes to mating with other males’ mates.

On the other hand, the yellow neck provides no resources for nest building and fights few battles. The long term cost in energy, health and resources is low. (Though the short term cost involved in seduction may be high). Perhaps this can be regarded as the low-risk and low-success
strategy.

Why would a male choose to be a Blue Throat?

For humans – as for all creatures - there is a big cost attached to
mating – regardless of whether it results in babies.

One male “yellow neck” I know, Jason, estimates that it takes him 7 hours to seduce a female. That is, from the time he first meets her he will usually put in seven hours of effort, on average, to have sex with her. Because he is very keen to have sex with females he will go out five or six nights a week to do this. He is successful 80% of the time. (But it took him two continuous years of practice to get this successful!)

This is a huge effort. Not all males are willing to put in this kind if effort to have sex, even if casual sex is what they seek.
